THE government of Plateau State will soon organize a retreat in Sokoto state. The retreat will last for 7 days, the Plateau State Governor Rt. Hon Barrister Simon Lalong has revealed.
Barrister Lalong revealed this while in Sokoto for the APC organized Zonal Public Hearing on True Federalism – Monday 25th September, 2017 held at the Sultan Muhammadu Maccido Institute of Quran and General Studies where a number of its stalwarts, party stake holders, loyalists presented memorandums on the issue.
Rt. Hon Simon Lalong said this is to reciprocate the Government of Sokoto Retreat held in Plateau in March this year 2017 where it deliberated on many issues ranging from social, economic, political and religious with a view to strategizing on he way forward while thanking his colleague, the Sokoto State Governor and the people of the state.
On the Public Hearing on True Federalism, Barrister Lalong who is also the Northern Zonal Chairmen of the committee said the committee’s job is to collect and collate all opinions/suggestions from all the stake holders and submit same to its National Headquarters for further action.
He said this followed the President Muhammed Buhari believe in carrying the masses along and his policy of keeping Nigeria as one indivisible country being he mission of the founding fathers and the context of the Nigeria National Anthem.
In his opening address the Sokoto State Governor Rt. Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal said following the current negative issues that boarders on Restructuring, Revolution, Creation of more States, Balkanizing the Nation and other such matters, APC decided to organize the public hearing on True Federalism.
That at the end of the exercise, the party, APC will have a stand on the restructuring issue at stake even as its not Government oriented but a plat form for strength to slog it out with those clamoring about marginalization, state creation and boundary adjustment and even the National Constitutional Conference resolution.
In his address the Kebbi State Governor, Alhaji Atiku Bagudu said the state need to be allocated with some percentage or Resources derivation since part of the water for electricity generation at Kainji come from its land and that the percentage should be in pariparsue with that of Niger Delta Region.
He also said the exercise going on in Sokoto state is a show of respect to democratic norms, good governance while pledging his support to the committee whom he said he believe will do a good job through collation of peoples views on the issue without skipping any, adding that even the 3 states that are involved in the exercise i.e. Sokoto Kebbi and Zamfara have all it takes to debate on the subject matter –True Federalism after which all will smile for the expected result of keeping Nigeria one for all and sundry without fear or favour.
The Zamfara state Governor Abdulaziz who was represented by his deputy said the National Anthem concerning the unity of the country Nigeria makes it clear that its indivisible as its call for all to defend its unity. Saying that one wonders about the method the agitators for carrying itself out of the country whether through religion, zone, tribe or race, economic resources or numerical strength which, according to him, non of these can be attainable politically.
In his submission, one of the Kebbi State CAN members said the issue of state creation should not be discarded because it would handle unemployment, lead to socio economic development and attract more investors through new states if created.
Our Correspondent also reports that most of the delegates from Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara states vehemently opposed creation of more states, saying, there are nor funds (cash) to execute such project.
That the 13% Resource control to the Niger Delta Region should be slashed immediately to 8% and that same amount should also be given to other states that has mineral for exploration and production of what is available in their land such as solid minerals.
The group also stated that the current structure of 36 states in the country should be maintained, land tenure to remain in the Federal government portfolio, Zoning not to be enshrined in the constitution, but, left for political parties to decide and that Resources control should remain I the Federal Government Office
As for the bicameral legislature, they will call for abolition of one of the national assembly chambers, and the only Female that presented memorandum, vehemently opposed the idea of creating more states as, according to her, the nation can not handle such project because there o are no funds for its/there execution but quickly added that the present 36 states structure to be maintained.
